Her Royal Highness The Princess Victoria Adelaide Mary Louisa of the United Kingdom was born November 21st 1840 to Her Majesty Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom and His Royal Highness Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, Duke of Saxony. The Princess Victoria's surviving grandparents were her maternal grandmother, Princess Victoria of Saxe-Coburg-Saafeld, and her paternal grandfather, Ernest I, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. Her Royal Highness was the first born of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, and was also the Heiress Presumptive to the throne of the United Kingdom from her birth in 1840, to the day her brother, Prince Albert Edward, was born, in 1841. Princess Victoria received the title of Princess Royal in 1841, a title given to the eldest or only daughter of a sovereign of the United Kingdom. The title was last given to the eldest daughter of King George III and Queen Consort Charlotte, Princess Charlotte until her death in 1828. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert had nine children, with Princess Victoria being the eldest.
Princess Victoria in 1840, Prince Albert Edward in 1841, Princess Alice in 1843, Prince Alfred in 1844, Princess Helena in 1846, Princess Louise in 1848, Prince Arthur in 1850, Prince Leopold in 1853, and Princess Beatrice in 1857.
On January 25th 1858, Princess Victoria married Prince Frederick of Prussia at St. James Palace. In 1861, Prince Frederick's father became Emperor of Germany and King of Prussia. Therefore, Prince Frederick and Princess Victoria became the Crown Prince and Princess of Prussia.
Princess Victoria received her first child on January 27th 1859, Prince Frederick William Victor Albert of Prussia. On July 24th 1860, Princess Viktoria Elisabeth Auguste Charlotte of Prussia, popularly known as Princess Charlotte, was born. Prince Albert Wilhelm Heinrich of Prussia, popularly known as Prince Henry, was born August 14th 1862. Prince Franz Friedrich Sigismund of Prussia was born September 15th 1864, only to live one and a half years old, and died in 1866 of Meningitis. On April 12th 1866, Princess Friederike Amailia Wilhemine Viktoria of Prussia, popularly known as Princess Viktoria, was born. Prince Joachim Friedrich Ernst Waldemar of Prussia, popularly known as Prince Waldemar, was born on February 13th 1868, and died of diphtheria in 1879. Princess Sophie Dorothea Ulrike Alice was born on June 14th 1870, along with Princess Margarete Beatrice Feodora, popularly known as Princess Margaret, was born on April 22nd 1872 as Princess Victoria's last child. The Crown Prince and Princess of Prussia became Their Imperial and Royal Majesties, Emperor and Empress Consort of Germany and the King and Queen Consort of Prussia when Prince Frederick succeeded his father in 1888. The Emperor-King and Empress-Queen Consort only reigned together for 99 days, as the Emperor-King Frederick died in June of 1888. After Frederick died, Victoria became known popularly as The Empress Frederick, she had also then become the Dowager Empress of Germany and Dowager Queen of Prussia.
Prince Frederick, The Emperor-King and Empress-Queen's eldest child, married Princess Augusta Viktoria of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Augustenburg in 1881. The couple had seven children, Crown Prince William, Prince Eitel Friederich, Prince Adalbert, Prince August William, Prince Oskar, Prince Joachim, and Princess Victoria Louise. Prince Frederick became the Crown Prince of Prussia when his father and mother succeeded the throne. In 1888, Prince Frederick became Emperor of Germany and King of Prussia, and reigned under the name of Wilhelm II after his father died. His wife, Princess Augusta Viktoria thus became his Empress & Queen Consort. Wilhelm II abdicated in 1918, after the first world war, as many monarchies, and other countries ruled by Emperors were abolished. In 1921, Augusta Viktoria died, and Wilhelm married Princess Hermine of Greiz. Wilhelm died in 1941.
Princess Charlotte, Victoria's second child, married Prince Bernhard of Saxe-Meiningen in 1878. The couple had one daughter, Princess Feodora, who was Empress-Queen Victoria of Germany and Prussia's first grandchild, and Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom's first great grandchild. Princess Charlotte died in 1919 after a life of ill health.
Prince Henry, Victoria's third child, married his first cousin Princess Irene of Hesse and by Rhine in 1888. The couple had three sons, Prince Waldemar, Prince Sigismund, and Prince Heinrich. Prince Henry died in 1929.
Princess Sophie, Victoria's fifth child, married the Crown Prince Constantine of Greece, and became the Crown Princess of Greece in 1889. The couple later became the King and Queen Consort of the Hellenes. The marriage produced six children, King George II of the Hellenes, King Alexander I of the Hellenes, Princess Helen of Greece and Denmark, King Paul I of the Hellenes, Princess Irene of Greece and Denmark, and Princess Katharine of Greece and Denmark. Princess Sophie died in 1932 at the age of 61.
Princess Margaret, Victoria's sixth child, and final to have lived past childhood, married Prince Frederick Charles of Hesse in 1893. The marriage produced six sons, only 3 who survived, while the other 3 died in World War I. The first born was Prince Friedrich Wilhelm of Hesse-Kassel in 1893, and then Prince Maximilian of Hesse-Kassel in 1894. Princes Philipp and Wolfgang of Hesse-Kassel were a set of twins born in 1896, along with Prince Richard and Prince Christoph of Hesse-Kassel in 1901, as another set of twins for Princess Margaret. Princess Margaret died in 1954, making Her Royal Highness the longest surviving child of the King-Emperor and the Queen-Empress Consort.
The Princess Royal was diagnosed with inoperable breast cancer in 1899, and died the same year as her mother, Queen Victoria in 1901. Princess Victoria is now buried in Postdam, Germany with her husband the King-Emperor and her two sons that did not survive childhood.
